Studies of Hong Kong Fishes-No. 2

AMIIDAE.

Apogonichthys ellioti (Day).

295

One example, 63 mm. Apogon marginatus (Döderlein) Steindachner,

as figured by Jordan and Snyder is apparently another synonym (Proc. U.S. Nat. Mus., vol. 23, 1901, p. 896, fig. 3).

Amia taeniata (Cuvier).

One example, 124 mm.

Amia doederleinii (Jordan and Snyder). Hung, Sor1 Lor, (Red comb

basket).

One example, 110 mm. Fowler and Bean overlooked (Bull. U.S. Nat. Mus., No. 100, vol. 10, 1930, p. 58) Scale's record for Hong Kong. Body colour pale grey, iridescent with pink and violet, below pink dimmer. Medial lateral band from snout, behind eye to caudal base medially and out to end of median caudal rays brown, overlaying gold. Vandyke brown spot, less than pupil, in brown lateral band at caudal base. Iris purple brown. Fins, except pectoral, all red.”

Amia kiensis (Jordan and Snyder).

One example, 61 mm. Compared with Jordan and Snyder's original figure (Proc. U.S. Nat. Mus., vol. 23, 1901, p. 905, fig. 9) my example shows the upper dark longitudinal line from above the eye extended back obscurely to upper surface of caudal peduncle.

SERRANIDAE.

Lateolabrax japonicus (Cuvier). Lo, Yu2 (Perch).

Photograph of an example, 480 mm. long of 3 lbs. weight, caught oc Kowloon Docks on live prawn. "It frequent the waters under the piers at the end of the Docks and appears to like dark spots.

* * have seen one 3 feet long, weighing 15 lbs., caught at China Light and Power Station, Hok Un, in 1928 and was bottom feeding when hooked. The flesh is firm and good eating. It is a good sporting fish and with a rod and line an angler would enjoy a good fight landing it; although the 15 lbs. one referred to was very lazy until it was within about 3 feet of the top of the water, it certainly woke up then and fought for ten minutes before it was gaffed." A. Gillard.

Serranus fasciatomaculatus (Peters). Sek, Pan1 (Stone).

Text figure 4.

Five examples, 103 to 157 mm. Agree in every particular with the description by Fowler and Bean (Bull. U.S. Nat. Mus., No. 100, vol. 10, 1930, p. 257) based on Philippine and Kowloon materials,

Serranus moara Schlegel.

Four examples, 87 to 138 mm.

Serranus awoara Schlegel.

Sixteen examples, 84 to 133 mm.
